My fiance and I are getting married and moving to the westside of Chicago suburbs towards the end of May. He starts a job in Oak Brook in June. We're on a tight budget as I'm still looking for work, so we're hoping to find a one-bedroom apartment for under $1000/month. The places we've found in Oak Brook/Lombard are pretty tiny for the price range we can afford. Does anyone have specific apartment complexes in the Naperville/Lisle/Downer's Grove area they like?

We're unfamiliar with the area and google searching led us to a couple somewhat sketchy complexes. Currently our top choice is in Aurora, basically one street over from what's considered Naperville, but from what I've heard of Aurora I'm less than excited to live there. Though the apartment complex looked great inside and out.

Any thoughts?!

You shouldn't have too terrible of a time finding a decent one bed for around 1k. I'd personally keep looking in oak park, also surrounding forest park and river forest. You could do the lisle/downers area, but the commute won't be very fun.

And don't forget Berwyn and Riverside. They are about 15 minutes from Oak Brook down Cermak. Very easy drive without horrible traffic.

If your budget was too small in Oak Brook and Lombard, Oak Park and Riverside may not have much to offer either. That would leave you with Berwyn and Forest Park, or maybe even North Riverside, which has a few apartment buildings here and there.

Aurora is too far west. There are ton of decent apartments MUCH closer. Lombard and Elmhurst have some pretty good choices, as do Willowbrook, Westmont and Downers Grove...

For $1000 you have many options if schools are not a factor, and can even look toward Westchester, Villa Park, or Berkley/ Hillside.

i would try Downers Grove. Check out the Grove apartments. They are nice, you may go over your 1K budget by a 100 or so, but it's probably worth it. We lived there and we liked it a lot.

And Oak Park will be about 400-500 above your budget if you want a decent place.

Oak Park would not be above his budget. I rented a two-bedroom place in Oak Park last year for $1080 a month.

Aurora is fine. Especially if you're talking "one block over from Naperville". I'm assuming the apartments are off of 59. Route 59 can be a real PITA traffic-wise, especially if you're planning on taking 88 to work. It could take you longer to get to 88 from your apartment than it takes to get to your job in Oakbrook once you're on 88.
