moving from Columbus, OH to Evanston, IL

First of all, read GoIrish's post as it is totally on the money.

Evanston is very pricey. Even the southside near Custer/Howard Street has gone through the roof. Forget about living anywhere near the university or even on the west side heading toward Skokie. West Rogers Park is a good bet... it has ethnic diversity, decent affordable apartments, good transportation options, great eats and some lovely parks etc. Good luck.

Some of the board posts are a bit strange. Hispanics are criminals? Others have already gone after that whacko. Poor people commit more petty crime and property crimes and rich people steal millions from pension funds, banks, and through organized criminal activity. In Chicago you might be robbed of $5 on the street, but some guy from Highland Park might steal millions from his company's pension fund and get off even though he has destroyed the lives of thousands of hard working whites, blacks, Jews, and Hispanics? Goofy.

This board is very suburban orientated, so some of these posts don't suprise me that much. Sadly. It is odd how for some people diversity=bad neighborhood.

Safe and cheap rarely go together, no matter where you go. My experience in looking at Evanston is that it is pricey, and what inexpensive areas there are are not very safe. Also, if you have children you want to be near good schools. The northwest areas of Chicago are much cheaper and fairly safe, but the public schools are terrible. Also, $35k is not going to get you very far anywhere in Chicagoland, much less in Evanston, and especially with a family to support. You might be better off in the northwest suburbs, or going further north, to Lake County. You don't mention if you have a job yet. It is relatively easy to find a job in Chicago or the close-in suburbs. Lake County is pretty much bedroom-oriented. Waukegan is relatively safe and cheap, has decent schools and a fairly good business climate. The mobile home parks in Park City are quite affordable, the town is very safe, and the west side is in the Warren Township school district, which is excellent.

As a white person, why when someone tells the truth about an area like Evanston or East Rogers Park they are a bigot? Evanston is a nice area if you have the money and live near the lake or Wilmette.

The schools in Evanston in District 65 are going through hell because the blacks want their own studies. Also, Evanston Township went from being one of the top high schools in the nation around 20 years ago to being now one of the worse in the nation (look at their reading and ACT scores).

For a somewhat decent place to live try Niles, Des Plaines, or Skokie. A person on this list recommended a mobile home park in Park City. Des Plaines has a number of mobile home parks that are near Metra and Pace Lines. I live in one of them.

Diversity is good; but, not when the blacks and the Hispanics ruin a neighborhood like certain parts of Park Forest, Matteson, and Evanston. I know people like to call people like me a bigot - oh well, I am giving my honest opinion. Yes, my husband and I did live in Park Forest when it was changing from a mixed village to basically an all black one. Again, look at Rich Central reading scores to know what I mean.

Your blatant discrimination against ethnic groups is appalling and misplaced. How do you know that the individual asking the question is not hispanic himself? I am ashamed that you're from Illinois and I hope those are not the beliefs and values you pass on to your children if you have any.

If you want the urban surburban living -- Don't overlook Forest Park - your money will go alot further. Diverse, close to everything, including metra - can be in the city in about 10 mintues, in addition to the EL blue & green lines. Yes, it is a diverse community- but that's what makes it vibrant and interesting. You can move to any all-white suburb anywhere in the U.S. -- BORING!!

Are there any bad "white" neighborhoods? You might not want to answer that one since it blows your whole white is better mentality straight out of the water. I truly do not want to be rude, but I hope you meet some non-white people who are really just "good people" one day. Maybe you will learn something. It's all really about the haves and have nots. It simple amazes me how many adults can't see this.

You make it sound as if whites can do no wrong. There is no white preson that has ever ruined anything.......

I'm guessing that you don't live anywhere near HP. If you did you'd know that Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Glencoe and Lake Forest (not to mention Lake Bluff, Mettawa riverwoods, Bannockburn) have significatly lower crime rates than Deerfield or HP.

Someones ethnicity has very little correlation to crime. Poverty and education level do correlate to crime. Therefore a white uneducated person would be significatly more likely to commit a crime than an educated hispanic.or black person.

Likewise more crime is to be found in areas with a shopping district (HP, Deerfield, Evanston, Oak Park) because there are more opportunities to commit crimes than in more rural or bedroom communities.

I doubt he/she is from HP. Most of the people I know from HP are educated liberals who would be appalled to hear this type of talk comin g from one of their alledged neighbors.
