Hmm..Coming from Ohio (moved recently) to Chicago, I assumed that people are more receptive to different cultures after all , thats how america is built and has flourished..but its really sad to see some of the comments (they are probably ignorant) made by some folks..

well, iam not jumping to any conclusions about the degree of liberals in Chicago but I will keep an open mind...

I have lived in Evanston for a few years and now live in East Rogers Park. Overall I think most of Evanston is safe. Do stay away from Dodge Ave (near Evanston High School). However rents can be quite steep, unless you go for a vintage apartment. Do consider the area around Central St and also do look at Michigan and Forrest Ave which are off Sheridan Road in Southern Evanston.

I am actually moving to Columbus in the fall so what areas do you recommend?

Some of the replies in this post really frighten me. I'm from the midwest, and left years ago because of the of bigotry - often disguised as pride - but might have to move back because of a family emergency requiring a long term stay. I need to be closer to my family, but I don't want to be miserable. Please enlighten me, as reading some of these replies have been disheartening and discouraging - how common or prevalent are bigoted attitudes in Evanston or Chicago like some of the ones conveyed in this forum?

Evanston is a very diverse area.
