Visiting Berwyn
I am considering attending an event in Berwyn ( Eagles Club (6309 26th Street)) in October, but I am completely unfamiliar with the Chicago area (it would be my first visit). Is the area fairly safe at night? I think I would like to use either public transportation or a taxi to get from the venue to a hotel either in Berwyn or in Chicago. Is this feasible?
Thank you for the help!

None that I'm aware of. The Carleton at Forest and Marion in Oak Park is where you want to stay. It's only about 10 minutes from the Eagles Club. It's a great hotel in a very safe area. And of course there's Philander's (steakhouse and piano bar) and Poor Phil's (sports bar) in the lower level.
There are normally plenty of cabs congregated around the Berwyn Metra stop downtown. So taking the Metra to Berwyn and grabbing a cab to the lodge is a good option. Then call Blue Cab for a ride from the lodge to the Carleton.
Don't forget to get take out from Taco Y Salsa right down the street from the Eagles Club before you head to the hotel if there's time! It looks like a hole in the wall but serves Berwyn's best Mexican food. Get the red salsa.
The area is safe at night, though as with any unfamiliar area, just use common sense.

I second BRU67's suggestion. The Carleton is a great hotel. You get there from either Ohare or Midway by public transit, but a taxi is only about 30 bucks. Call Blue Cab ((708) 383-2121), when you arrive at the airport to arrange a pick-up. If you go to the taxi stand, you'll get a city cab (as opposed to suburban cab) and pay higher rates.

Thank you for all the replies so far.
I did look into the Carleton. It looks like a great place, but a little pricey. I'll probably look for something a less expensive if I do make the trip.

You could also check out the Write Inn which is a few blocks away from the Carleton. Its a little bit cheaper, not as nice. If you want really cheap, you're best bet is a motel around Mannheim Rd south of Ohare (Franklin Park and Schiller Park area). The downside is limited public transit options so you'll have to rent a car. It might end up being the same total cost including car rental.

You might also consider the Roadway Inn in Brookfield IL, on Ogden Ave, just west of 1st Avenue - very safe area and a short cab ride (10 minutes) from the Eagles Club on 26th St
