Relocating to Joliet area, need help.

Hello,
I am looking for some help from some people on here please. I just got a job at Silver Cross Hospital and was looking to move in the area. I was looking at the neighborhood that looks predominantly Mexican. It looks to be borderd by Collins Ave to the west, rt 6 or Jackson to the north, rt 30 aka cass st to the south. Silver Cross hospital is about 1.5 miles away to the East The houses I am looking at specifically are on Virginia St off of Maple or off of Benton St which is about a block south of Virginia. In general is this a safe neighborhood? One that is free of drugs, gangs, break ins, theft, etc. One where I could walk my dog at 9 pm and not have to worry about being the victim of a crime. I am a white single male, and I am looking at the house to move into with my girlfriend that is of Mexican descent. So while I know I would be white in a predominantly Mexican area, I would have my Mexican girlfriend living with me as we are trying to buy our first house together.
