And when that happens, the same thing will happen to Hegewisch that has happened in every single other area of every other city in the country that went from being white to non-white. One of those unfortunate "racist realities" that we aren't supposed to talk about and pretend doesn't exist, but entirely factual none the less. If you want to live in Chicago/land, either be prepared to spend a ton of money to live on the northside, a long commute from the burbs or live in a jungle that isn't safe.

Safe, Convenient and Cheap. IN Chicago, you only get to pick 2.
Oh please. Hegewisch is fine. It's certainly a damn sight better than Calumet City.

Right now- yeah. Hegewish is fine. Yes, it is better than Cal City. I never said it wasn't.

There's no denying that the Hegewisch of today is "different" (in a worse way) than the Hegewisch of 10 years ago, and the Hegewisch 10 years from now will more than likely be totally unrecognizable from the Hegewisch 20 years prior.

If you want to see Hegewisch will look like in 10 more years, I'd say Cal City is a great place to start.

and if you want to see what cal city will look like in ten years drive over to harvey.

For the record, I do not have a racist bone in my body. I was not raised that way. But, calumet city has gotten steadily less safe over the last ten years and the statistics show it. It was a great town to grow up in. I am glad I still have the blue collar upbringing that I did. It's just that the element moving into CC is not taking care of their property and it gives the city a bad image.
As far as in one of the previous posts - Yes, CC's property values have went up in the last decade. Who's haven't?

I have lived in Calumet City since 1996 and have owned a business there since 2001. I love this city. Yes, there have been incidences, but the Village administrators and police are doing all they can to make it better. It is affordable and many people know one another. This year has been a lot better as far as crime. Most crime is domestic lately. Contact a local realtor who can tell you the best areas; the police will know as well. I don't want to say because as far as I am concerned, you need to watch yourself whereever you live. Good luck and welcome to Calumet City. My advice is: If you see something, report it. There are anonymous phone police tip lines so do your job as a citizen as well.

Thornton is a safe little town, reasonable priced real estate. Cal City is horrible though. I have a friend that lives there that's a police officer, and he doesn't feel safe. It is on a downward spiral and will not be coming back up. My advice would be to look into some of the nicer condos in the area (some with restrictive rules about children/teens hanging out on the property), plus someone would have to break through 2 doors to get in, or look on dead end streets as drive-bys are much less likely. I am involved in the politics in that township and have to walk the streets often, Cal City is slightly safer than Dolton, Harvey, and a few other towns. Also, look by the legion hall in cal city. The area around there is fairly quiet.

I am moving to Joliet due to affordability issues. I tried to find the safest area possible (away from the east side). Joliet has a reputation because of its east side, but the west side can be really great.

I advise you to listen and speak with those who live in Cal City. I used to work in Cook County. The crime rates in those suburbs are actually higher than Chicago.

What do you do for a living? I'm almost wanting to tell you to find a new job...
