If America is going to be the melting pot that it pretends to be, it's citizens need to transcend the superficiality that is race-- know that when people in a society are left behind, regardless of color, or lack thereof-- there will be dire consequences for ALL, as anything is only as strong as its weakest link.

I think this is one of many an obstacle and misconception that prevent people from really getting to know their fellow citizens -- I'm sure that Black Americans are pretty much settled with the notion that they won't be receiving any "payback" from ordinary (white) citizens; that is absurd....
Further, if you are a white citizen, of course slavery was not your fault; no one should argue that-- but to pretend that you don't benefit GREATLY from the discriminating practices set into place over the course of 4 centuries is to be oblivious--

and that is what minorities are trying to catch up to-- if you are a minority person in this country or one who is open minded and worldy, only then will you see just how things are tilted in the favor of white citizens.

And it is beyond insensitive to keep telling someone to "get over" something of which you have no conception-- and to insist that racism doesn't exist when you are not on the receiving end of it.

If people could look beyond race and be empathetic, they would understand the after effects, pervasive in today's society, of such an ugly time in this country's history.
You (general) cannot just exploit, degrade, systemically and physically oppress a sizeable portion of the population, strip them of their identity and dignity-- tell them they are free after a few centuries, leave them to deal with the fall out, in the face of intolerance, mind you-- all the while, still favoring the your own "race" in society and then say, 'why can't they just get over it' perhaps because it is not over for them.


You would not tell someone who has been raped to get over it, neither would not tell a Jewish person to get over the Holocaust.
It's not for you to decide when someone should get over something.

BTW, How many white citizens have a black boogey man story, i.e., was robbed at gunpoint; black man in the alley scared my wife 40 years ago, etc., etc.-- and wearing those unfortunate events as segregation badges-- Well, Get over it!! and stop bringing those tired, pointless stories up to justify your fear & prejudice.

I have several black boogey man stories from living in St. Louis and Chicago. I even have a hispanic boogey man story now that my car was broken into and laptop stolen in Portage Park (a witness saw it happen and the guy run off).

Some of the most racist people I know (including the likes of racist demogogues like Sharpton and Jackson, Sr.) are black. White people are certainly racist too, albeit undercover as it is not politically correct to be a racist white as a racist black. If I said half the crap Jackson says I would be facing massive lawsuits.

Calumet City sucks and is not getting better anytime soon. Please prove me wrong.

I agree with Rubber Duck. I would never live there. If I saw a job there that I wanted to apply for, I simply wouldn't apply so I wouldn't have to go there. I feel sorry for you that you are obligated to live there.

Humboldt1, I sooooo agree with everything you said. Quit playing the blame game and stop being "ghetto". It's an individual choice, not something being forced upon a person. Yes, but you have to admit that those who act ghetto certainly make the job of the police easier as they simply pull over those who act the part of a thug or gangbanger and often times these fools will have weed or other drugs on them. So stupid.

Calumet City is not safe, but it have'nt got to the level of hopeless like Harvey & Ford Heights. At least Calumet City have the mall & other retail shops. Harvey, Chicago Heights, and Ford heights got to the point where it look just as bad as some Chicago neighborhoods.

I've been in Cal Cityfor over 16yr, I raised my son there as a single parent he is now in 2nd yr medical school, and I have never seen a blacked out car rolling anywhere. Now the area is changing for the worst, mostly because the officers don't live in the city and really don't care unless they can make a profit from the local small time drug dealer. HEY evey city has drug dealers, I don't care how influential the city is they have them, they are just more low key. If you have to be in Cal City, be careful of the house you buy. If you buy from a white the inspection is good to go for the sell, a few weeks later the city inspector will find a lot of things that need to be fixed when to try to rent or sell it.

While I'll agree that the flight of the whites always take place when blacks or hispanic move in I will say Calumet City is not a jungle. With regentification going on in the city a huge number of whites are living among blacks. These area's where so called ghetto's until the whites moved back, so you don't have to go far north, but the city cost of living is rising sharpely. As Mayor Daily moved most of the underprivileged out into the suburbs, and preventing them from getting affordable housing in the city they are stuck. Many are renting housing from the runaway whites who are becoming slum lords and because they are white the suburban inspectors don't hold them to the same standards as other. Thus the suburbs are less desirable. As with anywhere if you are not keeping the wrong company you are safe.
