Hello, folks!

We bought a house in Evanston, right near Northwestern University...

We are now looking to furnish this thing!

We have a child and pets. Thus, we are looking for extremely durable, modern furniture. Also, we need to buy A LOT of things - we are moving from a small apartment to a fairly large house.

Our plan was to buy/splurge on a few things in each room (sofa, dining room table, clothes chests, bed frames), and shop at estate sales or Craigs List for other stuff (lamps, chairs, etc.)

Does anyone have good local advice for us? (Great local furniture stores with excellent customer service and durable stuff.) We are a bit afraid to buy things online, although we heard good things from another City-Data thread about Casco Bay Furniture. (Home Page - cascobayfurniture.com)

Also, if you can tell us where to find estate sales and the like, that would be useful, too.

Thanks.

The Toms-Price store on Old Orchard mall has gorgeous furniture that is "pass-it-down-to-the-grandkids" durable. Worth the splurge...

Most of the stuff in the showroom tends toward the mission / prarie styles which I find quite "clean" and complimentary to many looks including "modern" and the manufacturers they carry also have some contemporary lines that are very high quality.

I work at Affordable Portables Furniture store. We are a small business that has been open in Chicago for 37 years and is trying to get the word out about our 2'nd store in Evanston so people know about us. Open 7 days a week.

If you have one up there, you might want to check out Habitat for Humanity ReStore. It can be hit or miss as far as quality goes, but they can get some good quality items. Most items, at least at the one I volunteered at were things like dining sets, couches, coffee tables, book cases, and entertainment centers. Most of the ones we sold were in good shape, relatively new, and in good condition with no damage. Plus, even items where the quality isn't very high, you can't beat the price, especially if it is still a regularly used item.

Okay, I'll give a thumbs up to Affordable Portables. I bought a queen futon from them (queen size is surprisingly rare!), and it has been going strong for over 2 years now.

But guys, you do realize that you resurrected a 2 year old thread, right?
