Do any of you remember Kiddie Land? I grew up in Chicago and return each summer to visit family. Our children had a blast at Kiddie Land and we loved being able to go there at night for a discounted price. Now that it is closed, is there anything comparable?

They just re-opened Santa's Village in dundee and call it A-Zoos ment park or something like that. They have the little kiddie rides but I think the big ones are gone, and it is a petting zoo. The original owners foreclosed and they could not sell the property and now someone else is trying to make a go of it. hope they do!! Also, a few of the SV rides went down to some waterpark/hotel down by starved rock in utica. Now with so many kid centric childrens museums and even the malls now have play areas, I think the fact that the amusement parks have to close 6 months out of the year here, they cannot make enough money to pay the real estate taxes here. Land is worth too much, but with the RE bust, maybe we will start to see a comeback.

Santas Village was awesome, so was Kiddie Land. I also remember Leaps and Bounds, anyone else?

and Discovery Zone too! Not exactly amusement park fair but worth the time.

I think your best bet is carnivals. Fortunately almost everywhere in Chicago has a carnival going on every weekend of the summer somewhere.

I think that those old amusement park rides fetch a pretty penny at auction, they don't have to pass all those new safety regs as they are grandfathered. BTW at great america six flags, they have the older little wooden coaster from kiddie land and while waiting in line they have pics and stuff to tell about it. The line takes forever though... those old rides could not move through the people like the new ones do, things are a lot more crowded these days.

Gotta love the toothless cretins running the local carnies....nothing like having a ride operator scarier than the ride.

Speaking of amusement parks, back in the early 1950s, some guy sued Riverview because he fell out of his gondola seat from the top of the ferris wheel down into the gearing. He was hurt pretty bad. His lawsuit claimed the attendant did not fasten the safety bar properly. My cousin Leonard was a lawyer and represented the guy in the suit. They won the case and (although I don't know how much the suit was for) it went down as the biggest personal injury award in the history of the City of Chicago to that date.

Great America! If you go there often get a season pass and it's not expensive.
