pssh, as far as the safety issues are concerned, the part where you'll be living in joliet is just fine! just stay on that side of the river. since your 22 you'll probably find that area pretty boring. i'm 23 & my parents live in joliet & it bores the daylights out of me! you have a mall there, some other shopping areas & a lot of parks w/ walking/biking paths if you're into that. as far as the nightlife goes you're probably better off going to chicago. the great thing is there's the metra train right in downtown joliet. so, if you ever want to go to city you can just hop on that! that's what i did. chicago is a wonderful city (personally, i think the best city in the world but I'm bias) & I think you'll really enjoy it. good luck @ lewis!

The place you said your relatives live is right near where I live (only like a 2 minute drive). That area is completely fine because it is near Plainfield. You won't find much crime there. Plus you will be close to a mall, 2 golf courses, a skating rink, and pretty much every fast food/restruant you could ever imagine. You will love it at Lewis... it's not bad there either. I just wouldn't explore too much around the rest of Joliet because there tends to be a higher crime rate... but most of it is is due to teenage drug dealers.

Lewis University
Dominican,
I am an alumni from Lewis University. It is a great Catholic school with a really nice campus. If you can stay on campus I would suggest it, but comute from Joliet is not bad. Joliet has its reputation as you can see from the posts here. A lot of areas with crime and drugs, gangs, etc. Hopefully you have a good head on your shoulders and will spend the bulk of your time on campus at Lewis. All in all I think lewis is a good school, met my wife there. They have an excellent volleyball team if sports is your thing, but volleyball is about all. They aren't know for their sports! If you have professional ambitions (Lawyer, Doctor, whatever) I know that they are boasting that they have 90-100% of their graduates who want to go on in school have the opportunity to do so.
Anyways, might want to look at Plainfield if you want to live on your own, but if you plan to stay with family in joliet just keep to yourself and you should be fine!

There are some nice apartments off of Black Rd near Bethel Ave and Kungs Way (behind the Church of the Rock Run). My husband and I lived here when we were first married. It is a safe area and the apartments are tucked into a neighborhood of nice homes. It's about 10 minutes to JJC from here. When we lived there in 2003, the price of a 2 bedroom was $650, which I think was pretty inexpensive for what we got. My husband had a 1 bedroom in the same (4 unit) building before we were married for $550 a month. Most of the buildings are owned by different people so the prices may vary. There wasn't a lot of noise and I felt pretty safe while living there. My other advise is to stay away from the apartments at JJC - I've heard nothing but bad things about them. Good luck!

Hey Guys, i am moving to Joliet from san diego, ca. i will be buying a house in the historic cathedral district, is there anything i need to know? by the way i grew-up in the ghettos of brooklyn new york so i have seen it all as far as guns, drugs and thugs. i have read alot of bad things on this message board about joliet and maybe its me but i have visited the town and it seems ok to me..lots of homes for sale in the area that i am buying in.....looks like some kind of FLIGHT out of the area...just about every city in the u.s. has a little ghetto area, so no big deal.

Congrats on the purchase of your house. Welcome to Illinois. While I do not live in Joliet (I'm east of there) I always thought the Cathedral area was beautiful. The only thing I can comment on about crime is that I've never had a problem in Joliet. The city has done quite a bit to revitalize the down town area and they're attracting new bars and restaurants. They have the Rialto Theather that has plays and concerts. The Harrah's casino is downtown. Joliet Jackhammers are the baseball team right in downtown and they have a beautiful field. I think they're semi-pro but I could be wrong. Prices are reasonable to take a family to a game.
During the summer the City hosts a street fest when the NASCAR races are in town. They also have a great fireworks display over the river behind Harrah's.
The casino is a major revenue source for the City. With the new non-smoking law in Illinois the casino is saying that their revenues are down roughly 17%. If they continue to stay down the City may have to do something to make up the difference.
Best of luck on your move!

Joliet
You will love Lewis University it is a safe and beautiful campus I spent the last 4 years there. Just remember what everyone said when going home try to stay on the West Side and it is quiet. Take Weber/Larkin Ave home instead of taking Route 53 (where the University is.) If you stay on Rte 53 all the way back into Joliet you will have to go through some of the areas that are not as nice.
