I would live along the Blue Line in the City. Many airline workers do this. Logan Square, Bucktown/WP, Jefferson Park are all good options. You should be able to find a decent place for $1100.

I second this, the blue line runs 24/7 and would be the most convenient and inexpensive commute (monthly pass). Plus, the above listed towns give you almost anything you want. If you want more restaurants/ party scene, you can go to Wicker Park/Bucktown. If your main concern is safety, Norwood Park and Jefferson Park are some of the safest places in the entire city. In between, Logan Square is very up and coming, and there are some great values (disclaimer, it's my hood).
