I am looking to buy in the Warrenville Summerlakes neighborhood and am looking to get some information on the area. I am interested in the type of people that live there and the safety of that smaller area. This will be a first home purchase and I hope to make it a long term home for my spouse and I and our future children.
Can anyone tell me about the neighborhood and what I can expect if we decide to buy there??
Thank you!!

I knew a family who owned a townhome there a number of years ago ... seemed at that time like a perfectly safe fairly plain-vanilla suburban neighborhood to me. It's convenient to Route 59, shopping, restaurants, and the Route 59 Metra station.

However ... I've heard that in the years since then, there has been an increasing drug/gang problem centered in Summerlakes. You might want to read the citizen comments in this 2005 PDF from the city of Warrenville (but I'd take all such comments with a grain of salt).

On the other hand, the crime rates in Warrenville seem to be very low in comparison to the rest of Illinois, whether or not there's a gang presence; see Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed. I assume you've driven through Summerlakes; have you done so late on a Friday or Saturday night? That would give you a feeling for what the place is like during the hours when gang members are likely to be active. Warrenville's down the road from West Chicago which has had some serious gang problems for years.

This map shows where the highest crime areas are in Warrenville ... note that it includes Summerlakes in the highest areas. I personally wouldn't purchase something there for a "long term home" without doing a lot of research.
