We still are 5 acre min, and have been fighting a developer trying to change that for some time. Such few areas like this left.

brenty is on a distinguished road
The Barrington area is relatively wealthy. It does is not considered as desirable as the North Shore or Oak Brook-Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills-Western Springs-La Grange area. The towns are made up of New Money. People their tend to show off much more than people from the other areas. I would never live in the Barrington Area.

Doesn't Wayne, Illinois have a one-acre (or some measurable area)lot minimums also? I think I remember that when I purchased my last home. The sellers were moving there for their "dream home" on the open land.

Perhaps you never will. You are also very wrong, there is much old money in Barrington hills and has been for generations. I am not sure why/if that has anything to do with anything. We could and many we know here could, live for the same money on the North Shore. I have many friends there and love to visit as they do here. The space, hills, trees, acerage, horses, community is why many choose this area instead./Different strokes. Your generalizations of an entire town/village are wrong. New money, old money, in between money, lost money, show off money, modest money--just like ANY affluent area.

There are subdivisions in Barrington Hills that have homes on lots that are less than 5 acres, and a lot that are on 2.5 acres....I'm not sure how it works, but its not all 5 acre lots.

Interesting.... We live in Barrington and have heard the complete opposite from our neighbors. Many have relocated from the North Shore (yes, they are "Old Money") because they believed their North Shore neighbors tended "to show off much more." I guess it depends on who you associate with...

RGB123 gives a very accurate description of the area. I do agree that, in general, people are more "low key" and seem quieter than from other suburbs (and I have lived all over Chicagoland). This may sometimes be mistaken as snobbery. And, of course, like everywhere else, we have our share of "show offs."

I've recently become involved with the schools and am impressed with their programs (in particular, the gifted programs which have continually been funded despite state wide cuts in gifted programming). Sports programs are great as well.

I was apprehensive when I first moved here and had considered moving to the North Shore. But I have become involved in the community and I think the area is growing on me...

I agree that South Barrington is quite different from other areas of Barrington and may be the reason why many think the whole area "shows off."

You may want to avoid South Barrington if you have younger school kids. My friends involved with the school board have projected major overcrowding of the S.Barr. elementary school in the next 10 years due to population growth.

I think the people who live in Inveress might be upset to hear they are a part of Palatine or Barrington because it is a village in it's own right. Inverness feeds into both Palatine and Barrington high school, depending upon where in Inverness. Same for zip codes/post offices.

Most homes in Inveness have their own wells and septic systems. Those that do not rely upon either Barrington or Palatine for water and sewer.

Currently, Inverness is served by the Barrington-Inveness Police Department. This could change down the road.

Hope this helps.

Don't let the Barrington name fool you. There are ultra rich areas in every town and every county. And then the middle class, realistic areas too. And don't forget every town has it's slums too. Barrington is not excluded from that either. The 60010 zip code goes to areas I wouldn't walk the streets at night as well as the $400/per square foot housing market.

.
Just curious, where in 60010, would you not feel comfortable walking?
