True, you are right, it is a seperate village. I always thought of it as part of Palatine as it doesnt have a 'town' so to speak and I knew the kids went to Palatine schools.I always looked at it as several developments and not so much a Village- I stand corrected on that.

Barrington is like no other. It is comprised of many villages across almost 100 square miles and is located in 4 different counties and most homes have the zip code 60010 and therein lies some of the confusion.

Generally speaking, Barrington is:

Village of Barrington
Barrington Hills
North Barrington
South Barrington
Lake Barrington
Tower Lakes
Deer Park
Timber Lakes
Unincorporated Barrington

Most of Barrington feeds into school district 220. Some areas feed into Lake Zurich or Wauconda schools.

There are parts of Inverness, Hoffman Estates, Fox River Grove and Carpentersville that feed into District 220 too.

Opinions and generalizations often do not distinguish between which Barrington and then within a particular Barrington. The most expensive homes are usually found in Barrington Hills and South Barrington. These homes however, are often values on a per square footage and/or acre basis, assuming one needs/wants a lot of space. A $6.8 million sale for 20,000 square feet on a 22 acre estate is a steal.

Property taxes vary considerably, given different county assessments, townships and villages.

The entire area is known for it's lack of crime, family orientation and community service.

It has it's own city hall, over on Baldwin, off Rt. 14. It shares post offices with Palatine and Barrington as it does schools. It's a nice area, especially Mac Intosh.

as my username implies, i live in LBS. we move here march 07. actually my impression on LBS in general is that it is like a retirement community.. as ALL my neighbors are elderly. i love the amenities. . indoor, outdoor pool in rec area. loads of tennis courts, one basketball court, and the ultimate is u can go boating for free(well not really this freebie is included in the $400/mo assoc fee I pay myself as my share for living with my sis). which ironically, i don't get to use as much coz i am a homebody. that said, i don't have opinion on my surroundings coz my route everyday is house-work-house. speaking of work i work in LZHS. and the kids there are behaved, modest dressing normal kids... that is all. and i actually am surprised that i live in a filthy rich area.... that is a welcome surprise indeed as my annual income is below $16000. go figure how i came to live in this filthy rich area... did i mention im single... nudge nudge.. wink wink.

Barrington Hills is an absolutely beautiful area. I love the riding trails that criss-cross the village. They used to have a summer Horse Show that was the best in the Chicago area. BH has always reminded me of Greenwich CT.

There are few places more beautiful in the fall, when all the leaves are changing color. The people I've met from BH have been uniformly nice, down to earth interesting people.

Don't let the Barrington name fool you. There are ultra rich areas in every town and every county. And then the middle class, realistic areas too. And don't forget every town has it's slums too. Barrington is not excluded from that either. The 60010 zip code goes to areas I wouldn't walk the streets at night as well as the $400/per square foot housing market.

Somehow Barrington has gotten this reputation of having filthy rich people and over the top lifestyles. Hello....they don't even have a bookstore there.

People from Winnetka, Glenco, and so many other burbs, have people from Barrington for a midday snack!!!

Maybe it's the evangelistic Willow Creek Church that intimidates alot of people. That's a campus not a church, and has very little or nothing to do with God! Just like having discretionary funds has little or nothing to do with class, or even the smarts it takes to hold onto money.

Does anyone know where Barrington got this reputation? I lived in Palatine almost my whole life and have never been able to figure it out...

Just to set the record straight here; I realize that each of us carries the right to make our comments and opinions to be heard, known, and read. However, when we partake in the divulgance (sp?) of writing such negative commentary we must also be able to roll with the punches in the world of free speech.

I am a recent arrival of the town of Barrington and I already enjoy this quaint and pleasant small town very much particularly having endured a terrible fire in our former home. We were instantly greeted in Barrington (after the impersonal cycle of hotel living) with the "pay it forward" philosophy which this township entirely deserves such credit.

I believe that the "gossip" regarding Barrington and why it is considered a "wealthier" suburb is perhaps in the eyes of the beholder. Now,for those who are not in the higher end of the income bracket ,may, in comparison, view the town of Barrington as a pricier suburb to the surrounding and myriad of suburbs to choose from as they are so close together. Hoffman Estates has had the same branding of being the " it " suburb" to reside, but has since quieted for some reason, though Hoffman Estates is just as pleasant and reasonable as Barrington.

The following suburbs which are closely neighboring to one another are Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Rolling Meadows, Schuamburg, Palatine, Elk Grove Village, Inverness (another well spoken high price tagged suburb) which is on the way toward Barrington. Just visit the website and find out and make a few calls. The above mentioned cluster is the considered the Northwest Suburbs. Winnetka is North of Northbrook (completely opposite side and quite far from Barrington as well as Glencoe). Personally, I am drawn to the Northwestern Suburbs.

Interestingly, I have heard and have encountered, that Palatine, IL IS NOT the place to live depending on its pockets (which are wider than most) of streets and locales that are not as , lets say, well-mannered or immature. Palatine has a reputation of a lower end (quality and behavior-wise) suburban type with pretty flowers and is clean(also depending on which end you desire). In other words, Palatine it just is not the type of suburb which brings a newcomer or a native of anywhere in Il. that "wow" reaction. It just isn't and the same goes for Schaumburg.

Both Suburbs are not very friendly and are extremely stand-offish and I am not certain as to why this is. However, I'd choose living in Barrington anytime based upon the environment and the tightly-knit social structure where the residents will greet you with an instant smile especially when you smile first and often times the residents are the ones to treat newcomers with that nostalgia (which I have sorely missed) of kindness taking one a longer way than with the negative atmosphere found in both Palatine and Schaumburg (especially Schaumburg).

Barrington in my opinion, is more attractive and warm for those who do not wish to listen to the bass ear drum blow out of neighborly music, rants, thumps, creepy crawlers (ALL FLAVORS) and loiterers which are highly populated in the two above mentioned suburbs.

As for bookstores, okay, so I haven't seen any either, but the bookstores are not far and no more than 15 minutes away (perhaps less) in the neighboring townships. You will find whatever you need in the quick distanced neighboring townships. BIG DEAL. I'd rather take the distance than to eat crow with the surly and ignorant individuals that we have had the displeasure to have met in the (again) above mentioned suburbs.

NOW, to make an exception, there are some very worthwhile and easy to meet residents in the former suburbs, however, there are only very few and still it behooves us as to WHY the atmosphere has a sort of devil-may-care ingratefulness and a reluctance toward simple hospitality, a smile, or even BASIC decency for the privacy of others. There is something soulfully empty in residing in either (Palatine/Schaumburg) of the townships mentioned above; something missing, though the shopping and ease of distance is great in Schaumburg and it is a very well thought out grid-plan as far as the varience of services available as well as in the other Northwestern Suburban townships

Barrington possesses a richness of nature as the residents seem to care more about their community, upkeep, and privacy. A well maintained and growing community also appears "wealthier" when the community has a positive and humble outlook and is welcoming to those who have experienced the tragedy which we have had. It isn't cheap to live here for a reason, however, the deals do exist with some off the beaten path research.

The property prices justify what you need as far as location and quality of personal landscaping or construction services which are not as busy or exhaustive to wait. People do answer the phone here and is not a suburb for the bounce about non-serious type. It is not a hang out or a transient community. Relationships here seem to grow over the years with funny stories to exchange. It is not "wonderland", however, it is pretty, normal, and pleasant.

The very last thing that I would want is to move into a community with poor manners or that silly standoffishness AS IF it were a "wealthier" suburb (which either Schaumburg/Palatine is not). Now, Winnetka is a gorgeous community, I will agree with you, but why does any of this matter as long as your home is updated with the amenities you are seeking, that the property is clean and manicured, that your neighbors aren't professional closeted pot smokers, and most of all that it is quiet and pleasant.

If anything, the more "sought-after" and the more arrogant that the so called "wealthier" communities are, the more that you will be outcasted or humanly frigid your environment will be. If you have a car, more power to you, there are many, many events and things to see and do here and you can't beat that in these times.

Besides, who would race to live in a suburb who wishes to have Barrington for a "midday snack?" Sounds kind of pathethic and childish to many of us; but perhaps YOU should not be fooled about our lovely Barrington. Glencoe is just a manicured place to reside with igloo personalities and insecurity needed toward matching wits with the Joneses and Winnetka is okay, however very aesthetically pleasing as Barrington is. No one wants to live in a community who acts as if their pituatary glands are made of jade and the Hope Diamond.

This community behavior is a turn off to many and at best immature. But if YOU shall desire this outlook, so shall it be. I am happy with what I have and I will not be leaving anytime in the future or period. I really do not care for residing around stuffy, unhappy, homogenized and stuck in senior year of high school forever Prozac-ians. Give me a great home feeling with "gentle as lambs and wise as the serpent" connections anytime because this is a dying breed which I will fight to keep alive.

As for others who are interested in moving to Barrington, bring an open mind and spirit and please leave the smug attitude at the junction-intersection. Many of us are exhausted having resided around poor oppositional defective disordered people. This is a place to relax and to be happy and come home.

Barrington-"ites" are NOT awareness-hindered either, we will continue to "pay it forward" and look out for one another with out the Dirty Harry flavor. Many of us are in our late thirties and early forties and beyond raising families and are temperate and are quite over the wild days of beer and pot and other illegal substances.

If THIS is YOU, then, please visit us out when you have gain some miliage, maturity, dignity, intelligence and are ready to settle down into something authentic;Barrington is and growing toward an anti- flashy, pretentious, loud, immature, unfriendly, disorderly, reckless, whining or prideful community. It is in this unspoken understanding that Barrington is not the place to rebel rouse; it just isn't.

Do take some of the years of youth wasted on the young and try your hand toward growing up primarily, and, later, once you arrive into your mild-mannered years,THEN, visit Barrington. AND when you do, you'll know it when you decide for yourself if your foot fits our shoe.

Until then, Ta-ta folks and enjoy the comments that are helpful and worthwhile reading. Weigh the comments which reads like high-school depression and tacky information.

This site is suppose to HELP newcoming residents with intelligent suggestions barring stereotypes or the heavily racist commentaries found in some of these poorly resourced and vague opinions. Pages found in a healthy lot of some these opinions belong to the triple K network dot.org (not discounting those who need to scream out urban woes or disordered frustrations based on profound insecurity) or in the annals of psychiatic symptomology under psychosis with limited brain activity features.

Please consider the source. It will be to your discretion as to where you will feel more drawn to checklisting your personality to the town, city or suburb that you may wish to live. It also takes a LOT more than our meager yet mildly helpful commentaries to give you such important life changing ( i.e. MOVING or RELOCATION) decision. Once you sign that lease, it's a done deal for a year (depending upon the regulations of the state or township you decide for).

Check multiple resources, call the police department and find out the stats on an area; google townships or cities with a website about your desired location. Please use this forum as an addition and NOT the engraved wording in your mind. Remember, many of us have varied opinions based on personal experiences and not the overall picture. Some of us will definately express where not to bother, but YOU will need to do the final research. Even Wikipedia will provide information about a town or a city, suburb. Use MANY sources and read local on-line news papers about the location to give you a pattern of what the place is like.

I hope this helps and sorry about wind-bagging it; it happens sometimes with me.

Oh, and old sweatypants, 60010 is by far the most pleasant near Main street (I sure as hell would not share with you my actual street as Palatine residents do eminate that Browns' Chicken Massacre IN Palatine no less!!! Reminder...so what does that say about YOU????)

Barrington hasn't had these problems--genetically speaking of course---then ,again who knows what lurks any where. And why do YOU care about where Barrington has acquired its following? You seem to have a hot displeasure of it anyway and it sounds as if you are a bit intimidated by the quality of location versus where you live.

Believe me, it is not the first suburb to shake and rattle the mind except for that Brown's Chicken Massacre in which only a year ago your officers have captured the real killers (when this horrible and unspeakable crime occured in 1993 or 1994 and remained in the news right into this Millenium for the trial of all things).

Now, sweatyoldpants, what does that say about how slow your Police department is and how terrible uncooperative several fellow Palatine-ites were in a massive murder case like that. It was so horrible that the city of Palatine demolished the entire building and remained vacant for years except to sell Christmas trees on the lot and now it is some other open vacant place. Not another building will be built on that property based on the heinous attack on those poor people.

For others who may be interested in reading about this case, please do Google The Brown's Chicken Murder Case or the startling article called "49 Minutes in January" (I may have this title incorrect), however, it was a compelling detailed account of never before revealed facts surrounding this case and the people who live in Palatine. Also, there is a Book on Amazon about this horrific case. The article is a non-stop read if you find it.

So sweatyoldpants (whatever) re-arrange your unstable account about my town;what do you care yourself about a place you care little for. Remember, some of YOUR own zip codes (and very possibly YOURS, are unmistakably creepy and shadow-filled- normal-during the day "BTK-look-alikes-into- stalk- you -nutty-in-the- twilight-hours-pyromaniacs! Just as well. Freedom of speech works both ways sweatypants.

TabithaAngel (sometimes not so angelic when it comes to sweatyoldpants and silly comments like his or hers).
