Wheaton is amazing, very little to no crime, great public and private schools, extremely charming. It has a rather high cost of living because you get a safe, well educated community with tons amenities, parks and activities.

That clinches it for me, MovingBack243! I'm already in love with Wheaton, when I have yet to set foot on it yet! : )

Thank you.

And thanks to all who have shared their thoughts and advice here.

I find rent in the area to be 1000-1500 for a 2-3 bedroom apt. The cost of living is high, the schools are great, the community is welcoming and strong with lots of retail near by so you won't have to travel great lengths to get what you need. Some apts include heat/water. Cable runs about 56.00 a month for basic, no movie channels. I pay about 75.00 a month for my phone and internet on on bill (DSL). Heat, electric and water will depend on the size of your place. You can rent homes in the 1500 -5000 range depending on size. The Danada area has lots of apartment homes and townhomes for rent. The Briarcliffe area has lots of rental units that are privately owned. The Willows in north Wheaton are nice apartments too. I would stay clear of anything north of Genva road for rentals. Wheaton is a great place to raise a family in my opinion.

I have lived in Wheaton my whole life and can't wait to move West. Granted, I don't have children yet, which it is great for. While the town is safe and expensive, the general population are not very considerate to each other and has gotten worse over the years. If you want friendly neighbors that don't care if you step on their grass, choose Winfield or Glen Ellyn.

Wheaton is lovely. I have lived here since l989. Beautiful homes, and trees, parks, very clean and upscale lots of shopping, nice people, its a wonderful community. NOt edgy or exciting but peaceful. Has a real historic town core unlike some other "made up" suburbs. Older homes, historic homes, and new homes exist, along with some condos and townhouses. Excellent transportation and almost non existent crime I would feel safe walking alone at any time. Its expensive and has high taxes mostly to support the excellent schools.

Thank you, Irish Setter Girl, TCB247 and ToriaT, I appreciate your further sharing about Wheaton.

You have given me a clearer and clearer idea of what it's like to live there.

I grew up in Wheaton in the 70's and absolutely loved it. We moved away in the early 80's but have recently visited many times. Although we are far south, if I could return and live in Wheaton, i definitely would. Yes it is very expensive compared to the south but the people are very friendly and it is a beautiful peaceful town. I have so many wonderful and fond memories of Wheaton , Illinois.

My husband and myself with our poodle Bailey are missionaries in the Czech. We are looking for furlough housing for about a 5 or 6 week time in Nov and maybe the last of Oct. too. We are looking in the chicago and Auoria areas. We can't pay a lot since we still will pay rent here in Cz. Does anyone know of any available housing during this time that would be available?

Maybe someone else could point you to somewhere more specific, but there are a brick-ton of churches in Wheaton so hopefully someone, somewhere in or near Wheaton can help you out. There is a well-known Christian college there called -- surprisingly enough -- Wheaton College. And by "Christian" I don't mean "Christian in origin and still theoretically affiliated but functionally secular" but rather it still maintains Christianity as a central part of its mission. They might be able to put you in contact with local resources.
