Once upon a time long long ago, there was an uncorrupt Governor who didn't believe in taxing to death the middle class... Yup that would be folklore. Sorry, couldn't help myself. Do a basic Google search. That'll give you much of the local and regional myths.

I dunno if this is considered folklore or an urban legend, but it has long been thought by many that a tornado could not hit Chicago because of its proximity to Lake Michigan.

The legend of Resurrection Mary. A man goes on a date with a woman named Mary and notices here hands seem cold while dancing. He drives home along Archer Avenue and she asks him to stop the car. She gets out and runs to Resurrection Cemetery. There are several versions of what happens next, such as he follows her and finds her dress next to a tombstone with the name Mary, sees her ghostly figure next time he drives past, etc. There are also some about Fox Lake, where Al Capone sometimes hung out and once a resort area with a large concentration of taverns.

Here's the wikipedia page for Resurrection Mary (yeah, she has her own page).

Here's a page with a couple of additional spooky legends:

Sidebar on the Resurrection Mary stuff. Justice and Bridgeview PD's would have to post Officers by the entrances of the cemetery on Halloween to keep out those that wanted to get themselves in trouble. There was also private K9 Security hired for inside the gates. There was a horrible made for cable movie about Res Mary made. I don't recall the name but it was filmed in Chet's. I drove up and down that stretch of road literally thousands of times. The scariest thing I ever saw was when I almost nailed a deer running out of the cemetery.

There is something about "munger road" just outside St. Charles. It was made into a movie this year. Haven't seen it and don't really know much about the"story". Heard that the movie was supposed to be pretty good.

Not a legend, but look up the book "Devil in White City".
