Just wanted to know how long it would take to get to Chicago by train peak and off peak times.

Thanks,

Still mixed up.

You're actually better off leaving at peak times, because during those times there are a lot of express trains that stop at both Naperville stops and then go straight to the terminal station in downtown Chicago. If you catch one of those, it's about half an hour. If you catch an all-stop train, figure on a little over an hour. To get a schedule for the line that goes to Naperville, go to http://metrarail.com/Sched/bn/bn.shtml

How long is the trip on the train from Elgin to Chicago? And are there any express trains that do not make any stops?

About an hour, express. All make at least a few stops on the way. Elgin is about six miles further out than Naperville, and is two tracks west of Franklin Park, the BNSF is three the whole way. I rate the scenery on the MD-W better, I suppose others may disagree. Parking is easier on that line as well.

If you look at the Metra website they publish detailed schedules there. Generally to get out to wheaton or Naperville its about forty, forty five minutes. To go beyond to the fox valley its about an hour or so. Express trains might save five or ten minutes.

I can't belive no one linked to the schedules / maps: Metra System Map

The metrarail site is PACKED with info but it almost needs a "how to use" primer as apparently lots of folks do not know which lines serve which communities.

The service on the BNSF is superior becuase of not only its excellent track configuration (triple tracks allow for multiple express trains to bypass each other whether inbound or outbound) but also becuase there is no major freight yard inside the BNSF commuter routes while many other lines have to yield to freight traffic.

Speeds to/from Naperville are thus far higher. It is big advantage that can shave hours a week off ones commute.
