What about Long Grove, IL? It's quaint, has covered bridges and the like, and not too terribly far from Lake Forest.

I think the main question is what your looking for in a home and area etc. Generally, north is more suburban/ rural communities but more home/ land for the money, south more suburban/small cities more amenities etc. Generally any of the lakefront communties south of Lake Bluff and north of Wilmette are nice.

Im surprised noone has mentioned Long Grove here. I feel that town definitely has some New England-ish quirks to it (ie the covered bridges)?
