My boyfriend just got a job in University Park, and we're looking for something reasonably priced in the area. We've heard that University Park itself is not a great place to live nowadays, so we've expanded our search to anything within about a 20-minute drive -- 30 is possible, but not desirable. We've also heard varying accounts about some of the other close suburbs, but nothing very reliable/detailed/recent. We can swing about 900/month on rent; we'd prefer 2 bedrooms but are flexible; ideally public transportation (for groceries and other errands, and a job for me eventually) will be convenient and safe. So far, Park Forest, Tinley Park, and Orland Park are still on the table for us. Anyone have advice about those areas, or any other suggestions?

Is your boyfriend working at GSU or something? I know there's that big ol' "industrial park" but they only hire temps through staffing agencies... If you don't mind my asking.

As for your question. Park Forest would be an easy commute. It's safe and affordable. Shopping is nearby on Lincoln Highway. However, I'm pretty sure you're gonna get a bunch of recommendations for long commutes from Orland and Tinley - maybe even Indiana.

Orland and Tinley are a NOT a 20 minute drive from University Park. They're about 30 minute drives.

Anyway.. This place your bf works at, are they still hiring?

He's got a programming job at Applied Systems. It's a good position and will keep us for a while (not being married/having kids helps), but it was definitely easier to find a job than it's been to find a place to live. I've seen a lot of nice (and affordable) places in Park Forest, but have heard mixed reviews about the community. Thanks for the vote of confidence, though!

I think $900 for a 2 bedroom is almost just about the going rate in any chicago burb and you should not settle at that price point for a less desirable area. If you are looking for proximity to University Park and a friendly upwardly mobile neighborhood environment. Look into Homewood or Flossmoor. The area can be a bit more pricey than some of the other places that you mentioned, but the area is also a couple of steps up and is more middle class and upper middle class. As far as public transportation there are metra stations in both Homewood and Flossmoor. They both have great downtown areas with great bars, restaurants, and cafes. These two towns would be your best options by far. Check out the daily southtown Newspaper or craigslist's south suburban section.

Crete has lots of houses to rent...some are pricey but some are affordable...and still nice.
if you have young kids...the elementary and grade schools are great but the high school is bad. many parents homeschool.
check out the Southland Voice newspaper...for a house or a job...

Depending on factors there are many good areas close to the new position.
If you like a rural type setting Beecher is not far away.

Easy commutes- Homewood, Park Forest, Crete, Steger, Dyer, IN
Monee, Schererville IN, Lynwood, Glenwood, Frankfort.

There is a wide variety of home prices along with preferences rural character vs. urban character take your pick because its all within a commute from the new postion.
Finding your taste should not be hard to do.
Where are you coming from and what are the important factors in your decision?
