Evanston is a very nice suburb but it is getting very expensive. Renting in Evanston is usually a bad idea. A nice place (2 Bedroom 2 Baths) in a out of town local is probably $1000 to $2500. Close to the lake there are very few apartments more condos that are around $400,000 to $600,000. The Park Evanston, Evanston's most famous Apartment complex is around $2000 to $3500. But it is a great location and most units have nice views. Evanston is usually not good for people coming out of college. Usually people in college or established individuals.

I can not understand why someone coming out of college would not enjoy living in Evanston

Usually a home in Evanston is not obtainable by a person coming out of college. Most people in Evanston are in their mid to late 30's. Many Evanston people go on to the other North Shore suburbs like Wilmette and Highland Park.

This is pretty much the impression I got of Evanston. I really wouldn't mind living there but for the whole price thing...

What about Schaumburg? I can't recall offhand, but isn't there something of a secondary business district there? I don't remember the El going out that far, but does Metra service it?
