They're both good schools - do they really make a difference? Online shows that Stevenson is truly THE school for the disctrict, but do kids get lost on that huge campus? Is Lake Zurich more "accessible" for students because of the smaller student body?

Moving into this school district and want our teenagers to have the best high school experience. Any inisight would be helpful!!

I know friend's kids who do well at BOTH schools. What kind of personality does your kid have, what environment will s/he do better in? Where are friends going & is it good to follow these friends into high school? Stevenson is one of the best in the state, is very large, very competitive and offers many programs and classes for motivated students.

There are some rather large differences in home price / value too. It is certainly not like Lake Zurich is dangerous or anything, but the relative differences in folks who might prefer a more woodsy or out of the way home site and have the dough to pay for it means most housing served by Stevenson is pricier...

My general advice is that when you are relocating it is wiser to go for the higher performing school district. I think that in high school one has to also do a little research into what school makes more sense for your children to transfer into. Stevenson is one large school that is almost dangerous in terms of just how many kids are in the facility. I believe they have some "outreach for transfer" students but if your kids are not used to a very large school and the kind of competition there is for spots on sports, clubs , higher level classes and probably the economic and social aspects you need to determine the appropriate direction for your family... If they are entering as freshmen the pressures are probably a lot less as long as you have sufficient time to use the "visitation and orientation days" that are setup with the feeder schools... Ideally even at a more manageable sized school like Lake Zurich you could get your gets involved in the appropriate orientation with adequate advance notice...

Either one is good, though Stevenson is the cream of the crop.

Stevenson is definitely the more highly regarded. Just about any class or activity you could imagine is offered there. It's a highly competitive school, though, which some kids would love and some kids would not.

I think either high school would provide a more-than-adequate education for your kids. What I would consider is the personality of your teens. Would the bigger school feel overwhelming to them, or would it seem exciting? Would they prefer a smaller high school (maybe more opportunity to be a "big fish")?

As far as house resale goes, I would guess that Stevenson is a better address... BUT, that doesn't mean that is the best option for your kids. Depending on their maturity level, and how involved you'd want them to be in this decision, perhaps you could ask their opinion?

Good luck!!

Thanks so much for the advice! This has been really helpful for us. Of course we have read ONLINE that Stevenson is a large school, but we underestimated the competitive factor. We have kids who are going to be a sophomore and a senior in the upcoming school year......they are both exremely sad to be leaving their current school where they have established themselves.....they are both athletic and have secured positions on their various teams, but are a little bit tired/intimidated of having to start that process all over again.
While my teenagers are great kids, they are not super competitive types.....we're from hawaii for heaven's sake......so Stevenson is sounding a little bit MUCH. Smaller school might be the ticket. Thanks all!
