It's either ignorance about NW Indiana or really more about not liking anything south of 1-55.

Vlajos seems to distain all suburbs though so I wouldn't take his negative words too seriously.

By the way, Hammond, Indiana touches the Hegweich neighborhood in Chicago. So "Indiana" isn't really the fringes at all. Lowell, Indiana is the fringes.

Disagree, much of a contest. Indiana weather is even milder.
Southern Indiana and Hoosier Nat. Forest is unbelievable is beauty.
Asides, NWI is part of Chicagoland area and qualifies for the author's criteria

3 hours? No exaggeration?? Must have been a major accident or something.

Why not Ann Arbor area? There are numerous medical facilities in the area.

Funny you said that, because I intended to include Ann Arbor on my list.

I know many people who would love to live in Petoskey, and you are looking to leave that area?

We're considering it for many personal and professional reasons. It is definitely a great place to live, however.

My husband and I moved to Sycamore, which basically blends right into the northeast end of DeKalb. It's pretty rural. You know you're in the fringes of Chicagoland when you barely get Chicago radio stations. We moved here from Charlotte, NC last year so we could be closer to family and friends. My husband's originally from Chicago and I have a lot of family and friends in Chicagoland, so... to us it worked. We found a decent apartment, but the only downside is my husband has to drive 40 minutes to work every day, in Batavia.

I would say, go for it if you have a nice job lined up.

I would also recommend St. Charles/Batavia/Geneva. I worked in St. Charles all of last year and it seems like a great place to raise your family. I believe it was voted one of the best places in the country.

It's nice to have access to the city, (even if we are an hour away), but I will say it does get a little boring out here. Not much happens. The biggest deal recently in DeKalb County was the Old Navy closing down. But I guess boring equals safe so, that's fine with me.

The only thing I don't like is that grocery prices are skyrocketing. You get so little for too much.
