Hi! I lived in Chicago for 2 years for graduate school, but I lived about a mile away from the school. While I ventured all over the city while living there, I am unsure of where to start my search now that it has been two years since I graduated and left. I will be working in the Loop area.

My fiance and I love living out in the suburbs, but I don't want my commute to be an hour each way. Which neighborhoods would be a good option for us near an L or Metra station? We are looking for a place that is safe, pet friendly, has more of a neighborhood or suburban feel to it. Would like to get a 2+ bedroom, 2 bath and around or above 1200 sq ft apartment, townhouse, condo or home for rent for under $1500.

All your help it very much appreciated!

I'm commuting to downtown Chicago and would like to live in an outlying area- possibly Evanston or Oak Park or Elmhurst? or anywhere within a 40 min commute of downtown?

Not exactly how much of a "suburban feel" you'd get if you were closer than Park Ridge, LaGrange or Elmhurst -- any of those have good Metra service and with express trains can probably you get you to the Loop in under 30 minutes. If you are more accustomed to living walking distance to school / office you'll probably have best luck finding apartments within walking distance of public transit in Evanston or Oak Park, though Elmhurst Park Ridge and LaGrange also have some such situations -- for that matter so does Naperville, and it does have some express trains that'll keep you real close to our target time...
