In general those less populous, more sparsed, more quiet and wealthier neighborhoods are ones that are safer. You're also safer if you live in single house vs apartment as long as you're in good neighborhood.
You're safer if you're tall, strong causally dressed guy vs woman with luxurious accessories since you do not get that much attention.

I am not familiar with many suburbs though I live there. Chicago suburbs are huge. Areas vary greatly. I am familiar with Bloomingdale and it has good and more sketchy parts of town. In general any area north of Edge Water Dr is better, has better school districts, looks nicer and is safer than areas south of it. But as total it feels safer and neater than Addison for example.
