Default Evergreen Park

Hello everyone, I am starting graduate school at St. Xavier and I am considering staying in grad student housing, which is in Evergreen Park. The university rented out some rooms at an apartment complex called The Riviera, which is located at 9739 S. Kedzie Avenue.

Does anyone know anything about the safety of this area? I am from out-of-state and am not familiar with the area at all. I am asking mostly because this is one of the first things that I saw when I searched on the apartment-

Robbery in Riviera Apt. - News - The Xavierite - Saint Xavier University

I realize that things like that can happen anywhere, but I just wanted to get a better idea of the area.

Generally, EP and Oak Lawn are quite safe places. They are inner ring suburbs, so OCCASIONALLY, NOT ALL THE TIME, crime can spill over from the city. I'd try not to be on a main street, though? That's just me, lol, but do as you please.

I doubt that you have anything to worry about. Enjoy your new place. Did you try Chicago Ridge?

I would also look into Mt Greenwood, it's nearby also. Evergreen Park can have shady areas, just like every other area. I know many fireman and Policemen that live in Mt Greenwood as opposed to Evergreen Park..

That's because they're required to live in the city. If the residency requirement were ever rescinded, there'd be an exodus of city employees into the suburbs that would tax Moses' ability to manage it. Not that Mt. Greenwood is a bad place or anything, but the abundance of city workers in periphery neighborhoods like MtG has nothing to do with those neighborhoods being particularly special compared to the suburbs they border.
