Ya know what? Get a decent realtor, tell her what your criteria are, and she'll steer you away from areas you don't want to live in, to the best of your financial ability anyway (which probably isn't an issue if you're leaving Long Island). No need for slummin' it on city-data.

Go to DuPage or Kane Counties. You should have no problem finding something that suits your needs.

Jeez if your coming from LI then you can probably afford The Crystal Tree Subdivision in Orland Park. Houses are on 1/2-1 acre lots and the homes all border a golf course. VERY NICE AREA! (Crystal Tree's gated entrance is located at 10600 W. 143rd Street) You would have no problem finding a house though on 1/4 acre-1/2 acre lots in either Orland Park or Tinley Park. A 4 bed 3 bath home with two car garage and basement all brick house will run about $350,000 to start and work their way up from there.

Orland Park = Orland Park Homes for Sale. Real Estate in Orland Park, Illinois

Tinley Park = Tinley Park Homes for Sale. Real Estate in Tinley Park, Illinois

Palos Park = Palos Park Homes for Sale. Real Estate in Palos Park, Illinois

Palos Heights = Palos Heights Homes for Sale. Real Estate in Palos Heights, Illinois

Lemont = Lemont Homes for Sale. Real Estate in Lemont, Illinois

All 5 of those towns are very prestigous and are in Cook County. I think part of Lemont may fall in Will County. All in all though, you will have good schools, average taxes, quality built all brick homes, and nice lot sizes for an ample yard. AND, those towns are all only about 30-45 minutes away from downtown to 90 minutes during peak rush hour.

Good Luck hope this helps.

I resent your "she" and "her".

You go right ahead and resent it all you want. I refuse to tiptoe around people who look for opportunities to be outraged. Most realtors are female, and my choice of pronouns reflects that. If you want rigid gender-neutrality, go hang out in formal/academic circles, not casual discussion boards.

Default Hello Don't Want To Leave Li

In the past, many of us - regulars have talked about the plus and minus of the Chicago land areas. So by spending a lot of time reviewing all of our past chat, perhaps you can come up with a good idea as to what is good and maybe not so good. In general, though, the more desirable a particular Chicago Suburb town, the more money it is going to cost you.
You mentioned searching MLS so I then wonder how you obtained MLS listings unless you are a realtor with MLS membership privledges. As an alternate, also view REALTOR.com - Real Estate Listings & Homes For Sale with its multiple listings. Another good idea would be to visit the web sites of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, and HUD.GOV for their 'REO' listings. And still another very good suggestion is to also get on the City - Data Mortgage Forum. On that Forum, there are a lot of very smart people dealing in homes and mortgages who can answer your questions. I'm sure they also have their own favorite towns to promote - - especially towns where they do real estate business.
