Thinking --

there are a lot of great towns in the suburban O'Hare area

depending on the "corner" of O'Hare that you will be working will depend on your travel times .... and with the congestion of the area, heading southwest will only add to your time.

I'm assuming that you are referring to the Rte 72 and Mannheim area, which is the North East corner of the airport. If you want to keep your commute shorter, you'd need to look in the northern or northwestern 'burbs, not southwest.

For me, Glen Ellyn - depending on the part of town, is a 15-20 min ride, and no traffic - i'm 15-20 to the Northeast corner of O'Hare (72 & Mannheim) add rush hour traffic, add another 15 min.... and probably another 5 to Glen Ellyn and that would be taking the Tollway [355].

All of that area of DuPage county is VERY nice though... .and fit your criteria very well, with the exception of commute.

HTH.

Elmhurst fits the OP's criteria, except for the great school district requirement. Elmhurst's K-8 schools are very good, but student performance at the high school level drops off considerably.

They haven't figured out what the problem is, yet. The Elmhurst school district is in the middle of two different processes to try to get their problems solved.

The first process is an Organizational Health Assessment, in which they've already determined their district is in the red zone (lowest zone - not good) for all of the dimensions that are measuerd.

Organizational Health Dimensions:
Organizational Health: Assessment: What is OH? (http://www.organizationalhealth.com/assessment_what.html - broken link)

The second process is a Strategic Planning Study to determine their future direction.

They have also determined that even though they are a unit district and vertical articulation is a primary strength of such organizations, they are having problems with vertical alignment of their curriculum. In layman's terms, students are not learning enough from one year to the next.

I would advise steering clear of Elmhurst until they get their problems under control and they boost their high school's performance. There are increasing complaints from Elmhurst's high school students' parents that their kids aren't getting into the colleges they want to attend.

All of this information can be verified by listening to school board meeting audio recordings:

if you look at the school's report card, it's definitely the minorities that bring the school down. it's really not that bad.

Jefferson Park,Norwood Park, or the "O'Hare" region in Chicago would be cheaper than most of the burbs within driving distance.
