I just moved here a year ago from New Orleans, and I had all of the same concerns. I currently live in Arlington Heights and I love it. I am about 20 mins from O'Hare, 7 minutes from the closest Metra line, and 40 mins from downtown without traffic (1.25 hours in traffic). From here i could access any of the far reaching suburbs via IL 53, I-290, I-90, or I-355. Traffic is much lighter here than in Des Plaines, plus we are closer to shopping (i.e. Schaumburg).

Now that's the type of thread of wish we had more of; the follow up post to see how posters looking for advice fared in moving here. What section of AH are you in? What do you like better here and what do you miss about N.O.?

Actually this weekend you can do it legally. Leave at 1:58 A.M this Sunday. I just about guarantee you make it by 2:05.

I live right on Rand Road, one mile from Rt. 53, in what you would call North Arlington Heights. I just like all of the land and things to do. In New Orleans, it is land-locked between the lake and the MS river, so you don't have very many greenspaces, or abundance of parks, trails, etc. Only thing I do miss is the cultural aspect of Southern Louisiana. There is no other place like it anywhere!!

If you don't need schools, you'll pay quite a premium to live in Glenview verses Des Plaines. Glenview's home prices approach North Shore levels.

The City of Destiny (DesPlaines) is OK if you want to hear train horns all hours, airplanes and put up with floods. One of the cheaper suburbs in the area and I think probably the only place in Cook County to have trailer parks within its borders but not a bad place by any means.
