I am currently residing in Seattle. Originally i am from Northbrook, ILL and really miss it. I just graduated from college with BA in communications. would like to start new career back in Illinois but i am not sure how job market is there. I did got few calls about jobs i applied but i had no time to travel and interview until October. My concern is too much competition. I tried moving there 4.5 years ago when i was just AA graduate but ran away back to Seattle cuz my family sugar coated situation and I was there without job and was getting rejected even for most plain jobs out there. NOw is job market these days, is it really bad>?

If you have internship experience (solid internship experience... I mean 2+ internships where you are being productive), it's not that bad.

I had 4 offers (probably 5 if I kept going at the 5th company) before settling on one in Batavia. I'm also fresh out of school with a BA in Business Marketing.

If you don't have solid internship experience... then good luck

I have no internship exp at all. I was too busy working for paid jobs in order to suport myself in super expensive city. I feel like I might have to go to grad school now.

The majority of entry level jobs that you will find here are sales.

That's far from true.

The ones I were interviewed for were for creative marketing positions. Nothing I applied for was sales.

Is your "paid" work experience relevant to your major?

PS Let's trade. I'd love to go to Seattle!

Well, marketing is number two.

And just because you applied for only one thing does not make what I said not true.

My paid experience is mainly childcare. I also worked in childcare department in a health club, was a teacher for 2 years, so nothing even remotely close to human resources positions I am trying to get at one point. My current boss said I might have to work for free cuz I am out of college and internships are hard to get, usually are for college credit and they give current students priority. As far as job I got calls back from, they were mostly marketing/sales/presentation jobs. I am not sure are they office jobs. Most are not. LOts of managers was trying to convince me to get licensed and sell insurance, but that is not a road I want to take. As far as Seattle goes most jobs listed as "marketing" are door knocking jobs that pay close to nothing.

Default Where are your roots?

Not to be intrusive but in my experience if you can leverage friendships / classmates / family it is a lot less likely that you'll only get "door knocker" job offers. Those are usually pretty desperate companies.

If you get a chance to talk about how the things you've done that demonstrate responsibility / direction (and child care / fitness DOES require that!) odds are you can talk your way into a true marketing role and less "door knocking" BUT you gotta be able to skip over the "recruiters" that are only looking to fill the lowly stuff for desperate folks...

I myself am interested in coming back to Illinois myself. Since some people here mentioned marketing jobs (I have an A.S. in Marketing) making a comeback in Illinois, can anyone elaborate on this? I'm interested in the Chicago area (not Chicago itself, a little too big for me LOL) or the Champaign/Urbana area and maybe even the East St Louis area.

Default One of the more frequent posters has her own insights into the downstate areas...

I don't think East St. Louis is every really going to be desirable.

The total employment base around Chambana is pretty solid with hospitals and the University.

Chicago suburbs like Bolingbrook adn Aurora have seen pretty impressive job growth, but I suspect lots of that is more warehouses and such...
