I looked at interesting house in Highwood with what seems to me good rental potential. But I am not quite familiar with the area. Being north suburb adjacent to Highland Park I assume it is good. Is it good and safe? How are the schools?

Highwood differs in many ways from Highland Park and the rest of the North Shore, but it's a nice little town with lots to offer. There is a significant hispanic population and many American italian families and their offspring that have lived there for decades. There is also a lot of new blood from the residents of Fort Sheridan (former army base conversion) which I think was done really well and attracted families, empty nesters and singles. Highwood is very lively, lots of restaurants, weekly farmer's market on Wednesday evenings, festivals (Pumpkinfest is a big one). I believe some of the somewhat recently elected officials (apst four years or so) have much to do with the good things happening in Highwood.

There is a Metra North line train stop centrally located in town, and another on the north end of town.

I don't know about crime rates. My perception is that it's safe and I don't know anyone who wouldn't go to Highwood to eat or socialize or whatever because of safety concerns.

Highwood and Fort Sheridan residents attend Highland Park schools, specifically, Oak Terrace elementary, Northwood Junior High and Highland Park High School. There is also a small catholic school, St. James, which serves K-6 or K-8.
