I'd look in Kane County. You are a little further West of Chicago. Prices can be less than DuPage County and there are more areas that have larger lots.

I talked to the county today about other issues and the subject of horse property came up.It seems they changed the rules on us.Our nieghborhood was zoned to have horses. Now the county will not allow horses on any PUD zoned property in Kane County unless they were there(grandfathered in) before the rule changed in 1997 or your subdivision had covenents allowing them. So,if you want horse property, you either have to look for a subdivision set up for horses with covenents for that, find an existing horse property that is grandfathered in ,or look for agriculture zoning. If a horse owner moves from a grandfathered property and sells his property to a non-horse user, the property can no longer have horses. For further questions, call Kane County.

Would you consider going north instead of west? There are several "horsey" communities in Lake County, Old Mill Creek, Wadsworth and Mettawa in particular. Fenced pasture land will be spendy no matter where you go, but I think this area will be less expensive than Dupage.

I know I was thinking more northwest myself. Is McHenry County a good place to look?

McHenry is an excellent idea. The towns are growing like crazy, but most of the land is still zoned agricultural and is quite affordable.
