Lemont and surrounding area (Chicago, Naperville: how much, homes, schools)

Hello,

My husband works in Lemont. We currently live on the north side of Chicago but considering a move to reduce his commute and find some peace. I am not familiar with western suburbs other then Naperville which I am not interested in.

The wants:

Metra station - I work in downtown Chicago
would be great to have a walking trail
nice downtown - not like Naperville, I'd love a downtown with restaurants and shops that are not chains.
larger lots - After 20 years of city living I'd love to not have my neighbors on top of us
Quiet - can't even imagine but so looking forward to it
older homes - do not want a new build
prefer not to live in a subdivision but understand this may not be possible
We are over 40 - no kids - do not care about schools.
Easy commute to Lemont
250k - 500k - probably would hope for around 400K or under as we are getting older and would like to retire some day.

Any suburbs come to my mind? I'd appreciate any advise you can give.

I would recommend checking out Downers Grove or possibly Lisle. DG has a nice downtown, older homes, and metra. Other close by towns near Lemont to consider would be: Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Woodridge, Romeoville, and possibly Joliet.

There are a handful of nicer older homes in Lisle but the overall lack of any sort of organiziing factor makes them far less appealing than the tightly clustered group of such homes in Downers Grove -- from the Fairview Ave station all the well through the historic core of Downers Grove and in through Denburn Woods there is a tremendously nice range of homes. Similar clusters of lovely older homes exist in other towns along the BNSF that are also convenient to a job in Lemont - Berwyn, Riverside, Brookfield, LaGrange, & Western Springs all would be much closer than driving from Chicago.

Lemont itself has a collection of historic homes as does Lockport, though train service to either of them is signficantly less speedy / frequent than on the BNSF.

Not sure how much Naperville you are familar with but any of the lovely older homes near North Central College certainly seem like they would hold a lot of appeal too...
