I am potentially moving to Naperville for a job from Michigan. I saw that there were previous posts about Naperville apartments, but most (if not all) seem to be dated. I have been researching online all the apartments in the area. Frankly, most of the ratings/reviews scare me.

My focus is a 1 bd/1 ba place for under $1,000. What are some recommendations? The potentially best one I've found is Lincoln at the Parks, but it is a bit out of my price range and has low availability for their lower end apartments.

Also, can anyone give some indication of how much utilities (water, gas, electricity, etc.) will cost for a 1 bedroom apartments? Thanks in advance.

I lived at Addison of Naperville for eight years ... they have 1BRs for around $900. It's an older complex and a lot of the buildings are run down, but they're under new management and they're renovating the complex. Not a lot of garage parking; the garages were just plopped down on top of the parking lot paving and many of them flood or have animal inhabitant problems (raccoons, mostly). Some buildings have central air for their apartments, others have window air conditioners. My main problem with the complex was the people who lived there ... noise, not cleaning up after their dogs, working on cars in the parking lot, garbage in the parking lot. But this seemed to be improving toward the end of my stay there. The management was moderately responsive to repair requests, but they didn't seem motivated to invest money in things like replacement appliances or garbage disposals.

Most of the higher end complexes are over $1000 for a 1BR ... I'm at Brookdale Lakes now and love it so far, but if you're budget won't handle something like a Brookdale Lakes or Lincoln at the Parks, Addison of Naperville might be a tolerable second choice for you. It's not the worst in Naperville, but it's certainly not the best ... and paying more for a complex doesn't necessarily mean the management will be better. Plus, you can always move elsewhere in a year if you don't like it.

Regarding basic utilities cost, it varies by season ... maybe $100 for water/gas/electricity. Things like phone and cable will depend on the options you choose.

A follow-up: I'd suggest reading all the reviews of Addison (formerly Country Lakes) here before signing a lease with them:

Vasily - Thanks for your response. The website that you linked was the one that contained reviews that scared me. It does not seem like there are many good options in the area based on those reviews. The Addison seems to be an option based on what you have described. How negotiable are rents in Naperville apartments (i.e. offering to pay more upfront or signing a longer contract term)?

Any other opinions from anyone else?

Don't rent at The Addison. Poor quality in everything. Electric is outrageously expensive. Furnaces are old poorly maintained and quit frequently. I have lived here since Oct 2015 and in that time my washer broke, freezer broke, garbage disposal broke and the heat went completely out cost me hundreds! RUN DON'T WALK away from The Addison of Naperville

You might also look in south Wheaton. ITs about a five minute drive from the border of northern Naperville. There are several apartment complexes in south Wheaton I've known people that live in them. Lisle too may be an option its very close to parts of Naperville and may be cheaper.
