I moved to Chicago from Michigan a few months ago but still head back to Michigan at least once a month. I've learned that if I leave at 5 on a Friday I will get to Lansing the same time I would if I had left at 7 becuase of traffic. I'm wondering if anyone has tried an "alternate" route to at least Indiana? I've done a map quest search with "Avoid Highways" checked and there is a route. Just don't know if it is worth it and more importantly for a young woman driving alone if it goes through okay neighborhoods. Any advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated it. I live in Arlington Heights and usually take 53-290-294-94.

Try 290 all the way downtown to Lake Shore Drive south down Stoney Island to the Skyway to I-94 to Michigan. That's a reasonable alternative through reasonable areas. If you ever worry about going through any neighborhoodk just put your purse on the floor under your legs instead of on the seat next to you. Then never stop your car with less than 6' from your hood to the car in front. With those precautions, you should do fine.

Default Not Much Of A Choice For Your Destination

Although I agree with Mannigault regarding his suggested route - - I believe 'one' then has to pay a whopping fee on Daley's bridge? Come to think about it, he sold that bridge... but anyway the fee must still be out of sight in price. Isn't that bridge somewhere around Wolf Lake?
Before I read Mannigault's comments, I would have suggested going down to U.S. route 30. And then east over to U.S. route 421 ... and then back north to Interstate 94, 80 etc. That takes you up to the Michigan City, Indiana area. But taking route 30 really isn't any good unless the Interstate - 80 / 94 combination is closed down for a major accident.
In taking that combination to Muskegon one time, I became stuck in a parking lot situation for six hours - - in a huge traffic pile up mess on one of those Interstate highways.
During the summer months, a novel and very interesting / fun method to get over to Muskegon, Michigan is to take the car ferry out of Milwaukee. There is also a second ferry further North into Wisconsin that takes you and your car to some town North of Muskegon. I can't recall the town at the moment. But a good U.S. map atlas would point the way.

Take 290 all the way downtown? On a Friday evening? Are you nuts? You think 294 is bad...

You forget that I did just that for ten years. I suggest books on tape or Roe Conn.

But seriously, once you pass 1st Avenue, its not too bad going east toward Chicago on 290. Just take Congress all the way to Lake Shore Drive -- don't try to take the Dan Ryan to I-55 to Lake Shore Drive. Its jammed.

Thanks for the suggestions. SOunds like I"m out of luck though. A couple of people have told me to drive towards the city then around (via 90 or 290) but I can't see how going into the eye of the storm is going to help. Guess I'll just wait till 7 tonight. Hopefully the rain stops by then!

290 is sometimes ok between 1st Ave and when you get near downtown - but lately it's insane traffic all the time from 290 to 55 trying to get to lakeshore. Maybe Roosevelt?

How about going further west before heading east? LIke taking 290 to 355 to 55 then over to 294?IT seems like the most traffic is around where 290 and 294 meet. Any thoughts? According to google maps, it would take me 30 minutes out of my way but that could end up worth it if the traffic isn't as bad. I don't know though.

Honestly, the route you're taking is still the best. 290 is a mess. 355 to 55 is way out of the way.
