I heard that Metra is holding a ticket drawing to help fill some seats. Seems just a short time ago the complaint was not enough seats on the train. Of course they did have a whopping fare increase last year. And a few events beyond Metra's control, such as the NATO summit didn't help. A drop off of less than 2% isn't bad. Will it work? Will it work too well?

I don't really think it will work. If taking the train isn't extremely convenient then people will prefer to drive, in my experience. Taking the train takes planning and a lot of people would rather just come and go on their own schedule and are willing to pay a premium for that. Plus, at $400/month our metra tickets aren't exactly cheap anyway.

If I thought that boosting ridership would reduce fares I'd be much more hopeful, but no matter how packed the trains get fares only go up anyway (the CTA is evidence of that, IMO).

Metra can increase ridership by having better customer service & nicer conductors and longer running times
