Kipling estates in Shorewood has a community of townhomes near the north side of that development. I would think you could find something lovely near the high end of your price range.

Also, don't be scared off from Joliet as a whole. I can't speak for apartment complexes, but just like many other communities there are good neighborhoods and areas you might not want to be in. Lots of our friends live in Joliet with beautiful homes, well manicured neighborhoods, friendly neighbors, cook outs, block parties, etc. I would be wary of anyone who paints with such a broad brush, saying an entire city has high crime.

OP - I lived in Minooka for 20 years and would be happy to answer any questions. I have recently settled in Mount Prospect, so I can sympathize with your upcoming shift. From your post, I could not figure out what you were looking for outside of apartments/townhouses for no more than 900 a month and that you like the small town feel.

Minooka is right off Interstate 80 a few minutes west from Interstate 55. Your 30 minute commute preference will give you access to all the south suburbs from Bolingbrook down to Wilmington on I55, then Morris over to Joliet on I80 on typical weather/traffic days. This is a huge area to choose from. More so than apartment buildings, there are townhouse subdivisions in all of these towns that fit your price point; it will just take some weekend searching.

As Chet mentioned, I would not discount Naperville and I’ll throw in Plainfield. You will get used to taking “Ridge Road” up to these areas and it would take 30-40 minutes.
