Chet and Nikita - thanks for all your helpful suggestions.
My family and I made a trip to Chicago this past weekend and looked at some of the areas you suggested. Although I have no doubt we will be able to find a house that fits out needs/budget in some of these areas, the challenge is that I need something temporary (6-8 months) while we look for houses. Ideally, I'd like to rent a condo in a nicer apartment/condo community with a budget of ~$2,500. But other than a couple of options - one in Wheaton (too far?) and one in Glendale Heights (not as nice an area as the others and no train station?) - I am having a hard time finding condo rentals. Do either of you have any suggestions on where to look?

I think there are some decent options in Elmhurst and probably Oakbrook Terrace (no train in OBT but short drive to Villa Park UP-W line)but I know that short term rentals can be a real needle in a haystack unless you have a "corporate relocation service" do all the leg work...

Maybe try Oak Park for some home or townhouse rentals? Very convenient to OHare.

Finding a short term rental is a challenge. I was looking for one for myself recently and was not finding much. There are places that specialize in short term leases, but they are really expensive. The best thing I found was a condo building in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago; they would do leases as short as 3 months.

I'm a Realtor so I searched for short term rentals on the MLS that were near train stations and did not find a lot. I found Craig's List to have a lot more options. The problem with Craig's List is that it requires more legwork but, I think it may still be the best thing out there.
