Generally the closer you are to 294 (in the North Shore region), the quicker your commute to O'Hare will be. When 294 is jammed up, you can take local roads such as Des Plaines River Road which runs parallel to 294. You can drive entirely locally to reach O'Hare if there's ever any really horrible traffic jams on the tri-state in other words. Honestly, anywhere in the North Shore is a reasonable commute to O'Hare. The difference is that from the southern part of the North Shore and closer to the lake (ie. Wilmette), you're driving directly west for several miles, and slightly south, while the more northern North Shore suburbs you listed (ie. Highland Park, Deerfield, etc.) have more of a drive directly south and slightly west in order to reach the airport. Deerfield & Glenview have the added benefit of being closer to 294 and the nearby local roads (ie. Des Plaines River Road, Waukegan Road, Milwaukee Ave, etc.) that can get you to the airport pretty quickly. Wilmette, although a more cumbersome east-west drive to O'Hare, will give you the easiest commute to the city (downtown Chicago). So you need to figure out what's more important for you, being closer to O'Hare, or being closer to downtown Chicago (the Loop). Fortunately most of the North Shore isn't too far from either one in terms of sheer distance.

Depends upon when you go.
If southbound in the morning or anytime other than from 3:30 to 6:00 your travel time won't be long and won't be difficult(a "reverse" commute). Depending upon where you live in these suburbs: Highland Park = 25-40 minutes Deerfield = 15-30 minutes Winnetka = 30 -40 minutes Wilmette = 30 - 40 minutes Don't know about the rest. |
