Default Working near Green Oaks/North Chicago - where to live?

Hi! I will be working near Green Oaks/North Chicago, and am looking for a place to live. My husband and I are in our early 30s with no kids - we don't need the "big city" vibe, but we would like a community with a walkable downtown and some nice restaurants/shopping. I'm wondering if there are some communities that would fit that bill. Highland Park seems to split the distance between the city and where I'll be working, in case we want to go downtown, however, what is the community itself like? Any other suggestions?

Check out Libertyville, I think it fits your request. Highland Park and the North shore suburbs are tops( HP, Lake Forest, Glencoe,Winnetka). Great downtowns, great schools, plenty of restaraunts, Ravinia for concerts, the lake and beach at your door--but very expensive .
