I am a 24 year old single male who may be taking a job in the Downers Grove area. I know next to nothing about the area, or the different areas near it. A friend who also works at this company recommend not living in that area (they live down town and commute). I am from a small area in Indiana and I do not know if I can handle such a big culture shock as living in downtown Chicago would be.

Since I do not know the areas I may be asking too much but, I would prefer an area with some young professionals, trendy area, activities (shops, restaurants, nightlife), parking, as safe as possible given this crazy world, and less hectic traffic/commute to work. However it would be nice to be near some sort of public transit, or highways if I would want to go to the city. I have a budget around $1,000 per month, which may be unrealistic.

Any specif areas to look at or consider?

Depending on what your interests are in may be wise to be near your pal to help get know the area. Downers Grove itself is one of the nice suburbs and has a well developed downtown centered around its train station that has excellent Metra service to the Loop. There are variety of resturants and bars though no suburb can hold a candle to the variety of nightlife in Chicago...

It would not be nuts to consider some of the apartment options in Lisle or Naperville as those areas do have a larger number of nightspots that attract young people, but again compared to Chicago there are far fewer options...

Odds are your workplace is close enough to Lombard to also consider apartments in that area, though it arguably is less attractive than even Downers Grove...

Really comes down to what sort of trade offs you what can handle -- easier commute to a quieter area vs much longer commute with more nightlife options but likely higher costs for driving and more hassles parking.

If you want to live where you have what you're looking for, here's a link to downtown DG. That would be around Main and the Burlington train station.

Naperville would probably have the best nightlife in the area. I would check out Four Lakes in Lisle. It is a huge apartment/condo complex next door to Naperville with tons of young singles. It has a ski hill, at least 4 pools, great fitness center and a pub with live music and other events where people hang out. Plus, you can head out to the nightlife that downtown Naperville has to offer whenever you want since it's so close.
