I say stick with where you work. I currently live in the northern area of Arlington heights, and I love it! I'm about a 10 minute drive to the metra station, 2 minutes from rte. 53, and 15 minutes from woodfield ( in Schaumburg). So i believe you have all you need here. Why move somewhere you would have a long commute? Especially here in the NW suburbs, traffic can get bad. The downtown section of AH is nice, and there are many festivals throuout the year. I believe $1600 could get you a really nice 2 bedroom all throughout the village.

I would rent near you work. Arlington Heights is a large town. There are parts of it where it wouldn't matter if you are in Palatine, Elk Grove, Buffalo Grove or any other suburb. If youre in a subdivision, it's all the same. You really need to be in the downtown core to get a small town feel and to take advantage of the walkability. If you don't care about that, any place in a 10mi radius is probably all the same.

And all of Wilmette west of Green Bay is "all the same"? I know the answer to that is no. Same for AH. It is not all the same sub-division look. Different sections were built at different times. Scarsdale is waaaay different than Berkeley Square. Lake Arlington is quite different from Arlington Vista. So no, it's not "all the same"

I think Buffalo Grove is a good option for you. Easy access to the city and other burbs since 53 and 294 are so close. Good shopping in Deer Park close by. Also, great trails, parks etc. and some very underrated restaurants. Even if education is not your focus, I would live in the Stevenson school district (north of lake cook road) as those areas are really nice and safe.
