we're moving in August, new job in north Chicago. I was wondering how Antioch fared during the recent floods? There are a lot of nice houses for sale, just wondering why?

You will see a lot of nice houses for sale now because the prime season for sellers to move is between May and August. The real question - if you have schoo age children - is how fast you can close the loan and take possession?

As for flooding, the entire state from top to bottom was treated to floods unlike some of us had not seen in 70 years. What actually happened in any area depends upon the source of the flood, and size of the water source. The Illinois River is the largest and longest in the state at 273 miles, and widest at Peoria at one mile. From what I read, and heard from friends who live near the river, it flooded from top to bottom and caused considerable damage to bridges, roads and other structures. It doesn't look like the Fox or Wabash fared much better, but I could be wrong.

I doubt that flooding is a driver for home sales.

What is a driver for home sales in Antioch is the poor economic conditions. While Antioch was booming a decade or so ago it is now a classic "bust" with many folks upside down. Worse many employers that did expand operations in that area have found the business climate to be unfavorable. There is more appeal in nearby southern Wisconsin...

If you can find a good value on a short sale or foreclosed home and are confident that you have solid employment options perhaps Antioch makes sense but for the downsides ought to be given some serious thought.

Also, although the schools aren't terrible, compared to other areas convenient to North Chicago the schools aren't as good. Areas like Vernon Hills and Libertyville have better performing schools.
