To Get This Thread Rolling
First off, there is no railroad service directly from Schaumburg to Chicago. For the METRA line, one would have to drive to Arlington Heights, IL. And secondly, the driving 'time' just depends upon the weather conditions, your destination in Chicago, and if there are any accidents or road construction. I'm sure others can elaborate on my basic answer.

If you're in the southeastern section of Schaumburg, consider the Metra station at Medinah (just north of Irving Park Rd on Medinah Rd). Medinah is one of the lesser known stations and is very convenient to get to by taking the Elgin-O'Hare east to Meacham/Medinah south.

40 minutes on a good day -plan on 45-60 minutes-- could take 90 minutes on a bad day.

It is bad, and you will be traveling on a highway that has major, major issues (that they are trying to fix). I would say definitly over an hour during rush (if you are going to downtown). I would try to either commute on off times, if that's an option, or to take your nearest Metra.

Howell--There's a Schaumburg metra station on the Milwaukee West line. About a 50 minute ride inbound.

My Mistake, Mdz
Well, thanks for the correction, MDZ. My last experiences with Schaumburg ended when I retired sometime around 1998. At that time, I didn't remember a station at Schaumburg. I know there is one at the Arlington Race Track and also downtown Arlington Heights. So my apologies to everyone.

Yeah I'd say at least an hour, and as already mentioned, could be even longer on some days. I don't know if it's as bad as LA, but I think it's safe to say it's pretty damn close. If you can, take the train, like mdz recommended, as I believe the train leaves once every hour from the Sch station.

Schaumburg commute
I live in Schaumburg and work downtown. I take the Metra out of the Roselle station. My door-to-desk time is 1:10.
