Along Illinois route 38 and West of Elburn, Illinois is a long stretch of beautiful farm land out towards De Kalb, Illinois. At night, that road is dark and can be dangerous.
Last evening around 18:00 CST, my oldest son was returning back to our home in Wheaton, Illinois. He came upon a very serious accident involving a semi - trailer truck and two cars. Since both Ryan and I are Milton Township "C.E.R.T" members (Community Emergency Response Team)... he stopped to help and also set up railroad flares.
So even though 'you' may not be a C.E.R.T. member, acting as a "Good Samaritan" which immunes you from any liability by law - - please get involved even in the minimum way. Please stop, set up railroad flares that you carry and assist people with also a flashlight and a blanket.
Although the semi-truck driver - - a woman - - was in shock and shaking - - she was basically 'okay'. However one of the two cars was crumpled up into a ball and lying in a nearby ditch. So when the fire and police departments arrived, they had to use the 'jaws of life' to extricate at least one or more persons from the crumpled car.
The only 'easy' source that I know of for purchasing railroad flares is from Wal - Mart. A package of three cost only $4.96 in our local Wal - Mart. So have at least one set of flares with you in your car and learn how to use them. Visit
Safety & Distress Signals for Marine, Highway and Wilderness from Orion Safety Products for more information regarding those railroad flares.
If Ryan had not used them, it is possible that very quickly there could have been a multiple accident pile up on that dark road.
IF each one of us takes this responsibility upon ourselves, the Chicago area roads will become a little safer. THANK YOU !
