Nysee: Thanks for the great info on Evanston schools. What do you mean about there being two EHS's? I thought the campus was on Dodge? You sound so sure that Evanston is right for us that you have me seriously considering it again! When we drove by the campus though, we were so intimidated. It looked like such a rough area. I just couldn't picture sending my girls off to that school someday.
There were only a few homes within our price range in the nice areas of Evanston and they needed a ton of work.

There is only one ETHS. I don't know why Nysee is telling you otherwise.
I think that you had said in your previous post that you were happy with your realtor, and she is obviously trying to find the best place for you. Follow your instincts and her advice, between the two you'll find the right place.
I don't live in HP, but I've never heard anything about a drug problem there. "Drug Problem" is code for "Its not my kids school" The drug issues are the same in most NS schools. ETHS does have gang issues, and I don't think HPHS, NT or LFHS are known to have gang issues. Talk to your realtor.

Should we consider Libertyville?

Based on the criteria you've stated, I think you'd be bored out of your mind.

But not bored in HP, LF, or LB?

Highland Park seems to be the perfect mesh for you of a vibrant intellectual community with a liberal bent, midcentury housing and the school/safety issues. Its a great walkaround community. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions you don't want to ask on the forum. I'm not a realtor, so I don't have any biases.

You might find LF and LB boring, or more likely too whitebread conservative. HP has more to offer culturally.

Anthera I would tend to agree with you, but if Jay and her family were uncomfortable around the HS, then they might like a sleepier community like LF or LB and HP is a nice compromise.
Jay - I don't think you would be satisfied with Libertyville - I could be wrong, but it's kind of like the difference between Sacramento (El Dorado Hills, Folsom and Granite Bay excluded) and San Fran if you get my drift.

Calidreamer,
Nysee is the one trying to change her mind. I'm the one thinking HP is a good compromise. Evanston is a great city, but any city where you feel uncomfortable about the HS and safety is not the right place to raise your family.

Libertyville is a very nice town, with a cute downtown and lots of nice subdivisions. I get the impression that Jay isn't the subdivision type.
