I updated the thread with our new price range after we lost everything on our house sale in Santa Cruz. We're now in the $500-$550 range and even that is a huge stretch. We walked away with nothing.

Thats tough here in Chicago, might be able to work something out. It is possible in this market to get a $675,000 home for $500,000, just so you know. Chicago has hit bottom.

Did you look at the house on Comstock today (in Ravinia)? If so, how was it?
Also, there's a house on Pleasant in the 500 block that's in the low $500's or high $400's. It has a screened in front porch. Not really your style, I don't think, but in your price range. I'm sure your realtor drove you by both of these... |

One of the great things about the NS villages is that the village halls all have files on every house. Anyone can just go in and ask to see the file. I found the architect of my house because I have a twin house. My village didn't have the architect listed, but the twin house in the next village had it in their file.

I always think of the western suburbs and southwestern suburbs as being more conservative than the North Shore, but maybe I'm wrong? Did anyone think to look at the past voting records of all of these North Shore towns? If a town went 75% for Bush in 2004 (after Bush had made enough mistakes for any moderate to know better), it probably isn't the right place for our home-searcher... |

Well there are people who breastfeed for 3 months in a dark hidden room, and people who breast feed for several years and refuse to hide in a back bedroom. Jay is one of the latter.
A small conservative community will give more bashlash to a noncomformist, than a larger conservative community. The larger community probably already has a liberal contingent. |

This doesn't break things down by town, but here is the 2004 presidential election results broken down by Congressional District (congressional results are also listed). As you can see, the North Shore does have a more liberal bend to it than the other suburban districts! Yay North Shore! Though Lake County is more conservative than the communities to the south.
It's a little misleading, though. It states that Jan Schakowsky's district is "Northern Chicago Suburbs, Evanston", but she is my representative all the way down here in Uptown, so she obviously has a big chunk of the North Side. That would skew the results liberal, since the North Side "Lakefront Liberals" are kind of notoriously the most left-wing politicians anywhere. WARNING...
