I work right down the road from these. Heritage Green is 100% Mexican now. But it's all families with children. No gangbangers. Still pretty nice, but very, very old apartment buildings. You should be fine there if you don't mind noisy children. But I've also heard the management has gone downhill there.
Park Butterfield, used to be really bad. Even had it's own police department. But I've heard they've rebuilt it and it looks nice now. The town it's in, Vernon Hills, is actually pretty nice.
Stay away from
any apartment buildings in Waukegan. They are always having issues with crime. Break ins, gang members hanging out in hallways and parking lots. Just stay away from Waukegan, and especially North Chicago. North Chicago is REALLY bad with crime.
Park City is a nice area. Still pretty decent. You might find ok apartments in that area.
Grayslake is a nice area overall, but I'm not sure about Royal Oak.
