Hello, My family is moving to Chicago and we are looking to purchase a house in a safe suburb with a good high school that is not too far of a commute (30-45 min) from Itasca. Cannot pay more than $500k. Looks like North Chicago has reputation for best suburbs. So many and really concerned about traffic, too. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Arlington Heights would be my pick. Yes the north shore is nice but the houses mostly will be more expensive than your budget there and unnecessarily far away from Itasca.

Elmhurst would be a very convenient commute (maybe 15 min?), has a very good high school (York), and a great downtown area with restaurants/bars/Metra access downtown.

It is an upper middle class town with a lot of newer more expensive homes as well. You didn't mention how many BR/BA you were looking. You can get a solid, nice house for that budget but it won't necessarily be luxurious or brand new.

Be very careful here. There is a suburb called North Chicago and it is far, far from being a desirable place to live. If you mean the North Shore, you are correct to a point. There are similar excellent suburbs to the northwest and west with as high or higher achieving schools. But if you really mean the town of North Chicago, stay far, far away (unless you are in the military on the Naval Base and you have no choice).

The danger here is that "the" North Chicago showed up on some worthless survey as the safest suburb in Chicagoland. Utter, absolute nonsense.

Yes there are two towns. North Chicago and West Chicago. Not Chicago at all, way far away from the city limits. Stay away from these. When you are in Chicago the term is "the west side of Chicago" or "the North side of Chicago". If someone says West Chicago they do not mean Chicago at all.

Thanks for the info. and the North Chicago warning. I had not heard of Arlington Heights and looks like it has good schools. Someone had mentioned Vernon Hills to us as a possibility. Would the commute be long, concerned about traffic.

Yes Vernon Hills is too far away. Honestly there are so many nice suburbs there is no reason to live so far from where you work especially with rush hour and the snow we have in winter. Do yourself a favor and live closer by.

If work is in Itasca you almost certainly will want look at the western suburbs.

With a cap of $500k you will be priced out of the nicest area but should still look in areas close to I-355 or Rt 83 to keep commute managable. Towns like Downers Grove, Elmhurst and Glen Ellyn should work.

Arlington Heights, a northwest suburb that is mostly convenient to Itasca would be another good choice.

Do you think Arlington Heights would have better resale than areas in western suburbs. We will be relocating again in 3-4 years.
