i have 4 kids, and they ALL had nannies...$10/hr. tops cash, or make a deal for the day...I agree giving them a car is nice, I bought one for less than a $1k. i did the livein too, TRADED room, food, toiletries, etc to a student but my husband kinda didn't like the invasion of privacy...i lived in evanston. i also used a nanny service (not aupair) till i found someone i liked then made a deal with them.

I had a nanny in the city, not live in, and we paid her $400 per week, but her term ended in 2001. Most of my friends have older children now, but a live in, I would think $30,000 per year more than sufficient, since you would be providing room and board. Everyone who has used the au pair system has found the candidates very inconsistent, and had to go through quite a few before settling on a good one. We had ours for many years and she was like a member of the family; she was a mother, too, which was FAR better than a young, single person, in my opinion.
