My husband is being relocated and I don't know where to start looking. We have two small children, so schools are a top priority. We currently live in a country club neighborhood-we don't neccesarily need that again, but it would be nice. He will be working in Cary. I looked briefly at Hawthorn Woods, simply because the neighborhood there is built by Toll Brothers, the same developer of our current neighborhood. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The chicago 'burbs are loaded with great schools, but no one can help you look without a housing price range.

Of course, sorry about that. I would like to be somewhere around $500-600.

Check out the "Trout Valley" area right in Cary. Crystal Lake is right next door and though crowded in parts, is worth checking, certainly around the 'older' areas and the lake there. Barrington is super nice and though known as being an "exclusive" area, in this market you will find some houses in your range. Check out an area known as "Biltmore" which is around Honey Lake and the Biltmore Country club.As I said, its an expensive area but there are bargains to be had in this market. There are also some nice homes in Fox River Grove as well and also, easy commute to Cary, right next door.. Closer to where you checked out in Hawthorne Woods is Lake Zurich which has good schools and alot of affordable houses. All these towns mentioned have good schools and access to metra trains to the city when needed. Good luck to you with your move.

I think it would be best to drive through some towns and see where do you feel more comfortable. As far as schools, check http://www.greatschools.net/search/s...chool&x=20&y=3 (broken link)
There you can review school rating. Last edited by jessiegirl_98; 12-15-2007 at 01:25 PM.. Reason: ad |

I'm a big advocate of not commuting your life away-- If you plan to work in Cary-- look in Cary and Crystal Lake-- The hour each day you give back to your family is priceless!!

Thank you for all the help and advice. We are going to begin our search in Crystal Lake. Can you all tell me a little more about the area? I am looking for an area with lots of child friendly activities--parks, pools, playgroups...etc. Also, what is the shopping and restaurant scene like?

As I mentioned, check in the older areas around the lake.I think its very nice. Rt 14 cuts right thru CL and thats where you will find every big box store, chain restaraunt and every bit of shopping one would ever need. My docs/dentists are all there as well. I am not much for cookie cutter sub divisions ( I know they are a decent affordable option for many and attract MANY young families) or strip malls and CL has lots,so its convinient that way, but also alot of older hoods as well as a nice "downtown" and usable active lake community. Schools are good, someone who lives right in town will give you better advice then I can. Dont forget "TROUT VALLEY" right in cary (also a cute town). Good Luck with your move

If your looking for that "country club" lifestyle, I would look at homes down the street from CaryGrove High School. They have a great selection of "big" homes for your money but also a great community for your children. With a library, soccer fields and a grade school close by. Also, Cary has a GREAT Park District. That will surely keep your kids active.
